December 19, 2024I purchased this SSD about 10 months ago. I wanted to see what if any improvements my Intel Core i9 12900KS system would see from what is arguably the best SSD platform available. Also, just what speed improvements I would see in real life while doing my day to day tasks on the PC. Not just the obvious improvements when moving large CAD files and 4k video clips around. I had been using dual high end SATA III drives in RAID 0 as my working drive(s). They were a hold over from my last PC and performed very well for what they were.
To say that I needed a hydraulic jack to get my jaw up off the ground would be an accurate statement. What in the world had I been waiting around for? Telling myself that what I had was working just fine. That the expense wasn't worth it for what I was sure would only amount to marginal if any real world improvements. I was so wrong. There was an instantly noticeable uptick in the amount of work I was able to get done each day. Programs I use to render objects and convert video... Let's just say I no longer have the time to go walk the dog while the PC is chugging along. In my use case I would say it's like I have this extra invisible hour that I'm working each day. In reality, it is all from the extra speed the drive has provided me. After my first week I bought 2 more 4tb versions of the same model and I haven't looked back.
TLDR: If you do anything on your PC that makes you money or if getting a job done faster than the other employees makes you stand out to your boss then stop thinking about it and make the investment right now. You will thank yourself later, trust me. I know the prices can be high but darn it... these drives are worth every penny to people like me.
[Rewarded Review] Undiagnosed Stability Issues

October 31, 2024I really want to be to give this SSD a higher rating, but the performance issues are really frustrating. As far as the good, having this as my OS drive makes the boot time very fast. I do some light design work from time to time and when a concept pops into mind, it's great to just start laying things out. I also appreciate the included heat sink and LED, especially since the LED doubles as a drive activity light. However, that leads me to the bad. Running my OS off this drive, I get crashes with no warning whatsoever. That's particularly frustrating if I'm gaming or have unsaved work. The next complication is that the drive won't re-initialize after a simple press of the restart button on my tower. I need to press and hold the power button to be able to start the machine from "cold iron". Then and only then will it boot back into Windows. Now I will note, I titled this review as undiagnosed stability issues for a reason. I don't have a separate machine to test drive reliability on, and I don't have an extra SSD and Windows license to test for possible motherboard issues. I've built numerous PCs over the years though, and when SSDs start acting up, the behaviors can often be patterned. I don't need to pull it out and start over, but I'm not convinced continued use will improve matters.
[Rewarded Review] Blazing Fast! Great for PS5!

November 18, 2024When I bought my PlayStation 5, it was pretty clear it would need an additional SSD for storage. 2TB seemed like the best balance between capacity and cost. After doing some research, I narrowed it down to the Samsung 990 Pro and the Western Digital SN850X/SN850P Black, due to a combination of performance and brand recognition/reliability.
The Western Digital was at the top of my list, because the SN850P is the officially licensed model and was said to have a heatsink specially designed for the PS5. It was slightly more expensive and slightly lower specs. The SN850X is essentially the same but not licensed for a little less money. The Samsung 990 Pro was my eventual pick, because it seemingly outperformed the WD drives across multiple testing outlets, and it was actually slightly cheaper than the licensed model.
The 990 Pro did not disappoint! Zero issues after about a year of use. It is blazing fast! On the new PS5 Pro, the internal console storage took about 5 minutes to copy 600GB of data, whereas the 990 Pro did it in about 30 seconds. Insane! This drive will be relevant for gaming for at least the next few years. Buy with confidence!
[Rewarded Review] 990pro vs 980pro

December 30, 2024Recently bought a 2TB 990pro for less than a 1TB 980pro.
Going to use it in a QNAP NAS, so it will cap out at Gen3 speeds, but the 990pro has a number of things that outclass the 980pro regardless of speed; the 990pro:
-is ~50% more efficient with power management, so it runs cooler and uses less energy.
-it uses 7th gen V-NAND technology instead of 6th gen, resulting in better sustained performance.
-improved thermal management plus a heatsink option (recommended).
-newer Pascal controller vs the older Elpsis; this also contributes to better performance.
-I am not using it for gaming, but it has an enhanced Gaming Mode 2.0, that the 980pro does not have.
Regarding speed, even being capped at Gen3, the 990pro is more performant than the 980pro:
990pro:
Up to 1.4M IOPS (random read).
Up to 1.55M IOPS (random write).
980pro:
Up to 1M IOPS (random read).
Up to 1M IOPS (random write).
The newer Pascal controller and 7th-gen V-NAND improve sustained performance, especially under heavy or extended workloads, like for VMs, which is one of my primary use cases.
