Health benefits of Jamaica-found fruits: Guinep

The tropical climate of Jamaica makes it ideal for a plethora of fruits to thrive. These include fruits such as the orange, jackfruit, papaya and banana, which can be found across the island.

Not only are these fruits quite tasty, but they also provide a number of health benefits. Today, in Our Today‘s series where we explore the health benefits that Jamaica-found fruits are able to provide, the focus is on the Guinep.

This popular Caribbean fruit goes by many names, including ackee (Barbados), Spanish lime (Spanish), quenette (French) and honey berry.

Grown in other regions such as Florida, Hawaii in the United States and The Philippines, this jelly-like fruit is not only eaten as is, but is aso used to make juice and is stewed.

Improves sleep and mental health

Guineps contain an amino acid called tryptophan, which is known to help one sleep better.

Tryptophan is used to help the body to produce melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle, while the latter, is thought to help regulate appetite, sleep, mood, and pain, promoting feelings of calm and relaxation.

May help to prevent Herpes

L-lysine, an amino acid used to help treat herpes, is a natural component found in the fruit. Consuming it may help to prevent this common virus that causes sores on your genitals and/or mouth.

If you suspect you have herpes, do not self-medicate with guineps, immediately visit your nearest doctor.

Helps with bone development

L-lysine also plays an important role in bone development and maintenance as it helps in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendons, and cartilage.

It also helps the body to absorb calcium, a mineral associated with healthy bones and teeth.

Boosts immune system

Guineps are a rich source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which are known to play an integral role in immune functions.

Vitamin A helps one’s body to maintain its natural defenses. This includes mucous barriers in the eyes, gut, lungs and genitals which trap bacteria and other infectious forces. Vitamin A has also been known to reduce the formation of urinary stones.

Vitamin C helps to protect the body against free radicals, lessening the likeliness of contracting the common cold or flu and fights off heart disease and cancer.

Lower Blood Sugar Levels

The Guinep contains special proteins and amino acids that are known to help lower blood sugar levels.

Can Prevent Anaemia

Guineps are quite popular for the iron they contain and this helps in the prevention of anaemia. With enough iron, the body is able to produce enough of a substance found in red blood cells that helps it to carry oxygen, in turn, preventing anaemia.
